Venturing into the Planet's Most Ghostly Woodland: Gnarled Trees, Flying Saucers and Spooky Stories in Transylvania.

"Locals dub this place a mysterious vortex of Transylvania," explains a local guide, the air from his lungs creating clouds of vapor in the chilly night air. "Numerous individuals have disappeared here, some say it's a portal to a parallel world." The guide is escorting a traveler on a nocturnal tour through frequently labeled as the world's most haunted grove: Hoia-Baciu, a square mile of old-growth local woods on the outskirts of the Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Centuries of Mystery

Stories of strange happenings here date back hundreds of years – the forest is titled for a area shepherd who is reportedly went missing in the distant past, accompanied by two hundred animals. But Hoia-Baciu achieved global recognition in 1968, when a defense worker named Emil Barnea took a picture of what he reported as a flying saucer floating above a oval meadow in the middle of the forest.

Many came in here and failed to return. But no need to fear," he adds, addressing the visitor with a smile. "Our guided walks have a flawless completion rate."

In the time after, Hoia-Baciu has drawn yogis, spiritual healers, extraterrestrial investigators and ghost hunters from worldwide, curious to experience the unusual forces reported to reverberate through the forest.

Modern Threats

Despite being among the planet's leading destinations for paranormal enthusiasts, this woodland is at risk. The outlying areas of Cluj-Napoca – an innovative digital cluster of over 400,000 residents, called the innovation center of the region – are advancing, and construction companies are advocating for approval to clear the trees to construct residential buildings.

Aside from a small area containing locally rare Mediterranean oak trees, the forest is without conservation status, but Marius is confident that the company he co-founded – the Hoia-Baciu Project – will assist in altering this, persuading the authorities to acknowledge the forest's significance as a travel hotspot.

Spooky Experiences

When small sticks and seasonal debris split and rustle beneath their shoes, the guide tells various folk tales and reported paranormal happenings here.

  • One famous story recounts a five-year-old girl disappearing during a family picnic, later to rematerialise five years later with no recollection of what had happened, having not aged a single day, her clothes lacking the tiniest bit of dust.
  • Frequent accounts explain smartphones and imaging devices unexpectedly failing on entering the woods.
  • Reactions include full-blown dread to feelings of joy.
  • Various visitors claim noticing bizarre skin irritations on their skin, hearing unseen murmurs through the forest, or sense palms pushing them, even when sure they are alone.

Scientific Investigations

Despite several of the tales may be unverifiable, there is much before my eyes that is undeniably strange. Everywhere you look are trees whose trunks are warped and gnarled into fantastical shapes.

Multiple explanations have been suggested to explain the misshapen plants: powerful storms could have altered the growth, or naturally high radiation levels in the earth cause their crooked growth.

But research studies have turned up inconclusive results.

The Notorious Meadow

The expert's walks permit visitors to engage in a modest investigation of their own. As we approach the meadow in the trees where Barnea photographed his well-known UFO pictures, he gives his guest an electromagnetic field detector which registers energy patterns.

"We're entering the most energetic section of the forest," he comments. "Discover what's here."

The trees immediately cease as we emerge into a complete ring. The sole vegetation is the short grass beneath their shoes; it's apparent that it's not maintained, and appears that this unusual opening is organic, not the result of people.

The Blurred Line

Transylvania generally is a area which inspires creativity, where the border is unclear between reality and legend. In traditional settlements belief persists in strigoi ("screamers") – supernatural, appearance-altering vampires, who rise from their graves to haunt regional populations.

The famous author's well-known fictional vampire is always connected with Transylvania, and the historic stronghold – a Saxon monolith located on a cliff edge in the mountain range – is keenly marketed as "the count's residence".

But including myth-shrouded Transylvania – truly, "the place beyond the forest" – appears tangible and comprehensible compared to these eerie woods, which give the impression of being, for reasons nuclear, climatic or purely mythical, a hub for human imaginative power.

"Within this forest," the guide states, "the division between fact and fiction is remarkably blurred."
