Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
