The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
