Celebratory Displays along with a Toast to Life: Israeli Citizens Rejoice at Agreement to Return Hostages
The declaration of an agreement expected to lead to the freeing captives held within Gaza for over 24 months has generated delight and relief throughout the nation.
A group that has advocated for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it termed an “historic breakthrough”.
The agreement—which still must be approved by the Israeli war cabinet—will see the return of 20 hostages alive as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in return for 250 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.
To date, 148 captives have come back—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 sets of remains have been retrieved and eight hostages have been rescued.
Celebratory Moments in Hostages’ Square
Joyous gatherings have unfolded in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled before the agreement’s signing.
The gathering began clapping and moving to music beneath US and Israeli flags—one woman holding up a placard that read: “We love Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
A different person, Yael, aged 50, wept while observing the crowd dancing.
“I’m very excited—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We must witness them come back home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice with Fireworks
The mother and sister of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending homecoming.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My child, you are coming home.”
The delight could be felt in the streets in Tel Aviv following the news.
Released Captives Say Prayers and Raise Glasses
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then cheering “L’chaim”, meaning “to life”. She has advocated for the release of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their sibling Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage on 7 October 2023, and her body found in a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has participated with other captives’ relatives in pushing for a deal which ensures the homecoming of everyone still detained in Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is actually happening. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he said.
He stated he felt “shattered” that Carmel will not be among those returning home yet felt “glowing with joy” for the families of the hostages who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Guarded Hope from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose relative by marriage Eitan Horn is still held in Gaza, said she felt like she was living “a dream state”.
“We are immensely thankful to President Trump and all he has accomplished on our behalf. We feel like it might be the start of the conclusion of this nightmare, and embracing Eitan feels closer than before,” she commented.
But she cautioned that it remained too soon to celebrate.
“Until the last hostage is here, we won’t open the champagne. We will continue struggling... until it’s over,” she affirmed.
“Numerous events can happen until the last moment so this is why we are extremely cautious. We just want to thank everyone who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only once we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was taken from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was released from detainment through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
