‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from injury table to success with Athletic

Thehe first time the Athletic striker played in English soil, an young playing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he played in the country, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. The third time, against the Citizens six weeks after that, indeed, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, also. “Actually,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I got well angry,” the attacker says, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Man United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear how true it was, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the training ground, the city, the morning session is ready to commence; after it, the brief trip to Loiu and another flight to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on the upcoming match. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the requirements of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river surrounded by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and returning after absence in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to make the first team and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. He joined Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he went through a serious knee problem, dropped, a relegation and a recall before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his debut and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it helps. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, all resources are available, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: execute them.

“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players repeatedly. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed in tears in 2020, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day they need someone for your role, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after last year which, on occasions, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
